Delosperma is sometimes also known as Ice Plant, although this name is mostly used for the other close relatives Mesembryanthemum and Carpobrotus.

The names seem interchangeable, and it takes a botanist to figure out which one is in use at any particular time.

The plant I know as Delosperma is usually bright green, with opposing leaves, crowned in full sun situations with a brightly coloured pink, red or mauve daisy like bloom.

The flowers will close up in shade or on cloudy days.

Delosperma are used in containers and planters for a sunny deck or patio, and also for a ground cover in really difficult situations like the 'hell strip' - that dry, compacted and dangerous area adjacent to the road, where even brave gardeners fear to tread.
